96 days here
I am awake and up at 5am.
I need to do my preparations for tonight's 'Project', so I have to awaken early to do so. I have written a request for my time slot on the white board and hope that it will be respected.
I just had a little chat with my 'friend' in Egypt, trying to sort something out for next year. It would be wonderful to go back to Cairo again, maybe the Nile once more. Maybe next December, I hope.
I started preparing for tonight at 6am and have just finished at 8.54am. Time to rest before getting something for lunch and dinner.
12.07pm
Lunch (Chicken Curry) is cooking. I'd walked out of Colors of Cambodia over broken pavements, crossing the road, which was not so busy today, then sauntered under the shade of the sweet scented frangipani trees (known locally as krahom). Those aromatic blooms are just past the uneven footpaths near the Angkor Hospital for Children. Many of the food hawkers are back, selling grilled bananas and Maggie mee as I passed. I love these back roads, they're relatively quiet when compared to the main streets, and a pleasure to walk..
The road that I chose to turn left into eventually brought me opposite Angkor Market (supermarket). It's quite compact in there, and seems to be more popular with the expats, which has me in two minds. Nevertheless that supermarket has a good range of fresh vegetable and meat, and is obviously much nearer than the Old Market which cheaper, but has no dried goods to speak of.
I'll be buggered if I could find any packets of Baba's Meat Curry powder, anywhere. I think that I bought the last packet at Thai Huot Market, as I've not seen it in there since. In Angkor Market I ended up buying a Singapore brand curry paste (Singling Meat Curry Sauce), not something that I'd normally do as it's ready mixed, and also a one shot. Back in Malaysia I like to make my own curry powder or, if I am lazy, I use the smallest packets of Baba's.
I am so happy that I was able to buy a small bag of those lovely miniature potatoes, just like the ones in Bangladesh. Because I haven't afforded a chopper and chopping board, I had to buy boned chicken of the right size. I went for half wings. Consequently the size of the potatoes and the chicken meant that the cooking time is much lessened. As I can only carry two or three 1.5l bottles of water with the rest of the shopping, I run out of water quicker when I cook a 'wet' dish like curry.
Though, initially I was not too impressed with that curry paste, with the addition of ginger powder and some light soy sauce it turned out better than expected. I've had the curry with sliced bread bought today. It's not chapatis but good enough. There is enough for dinner too.
I had just finished this evening's 'Project' when the electricity went off again. This time for about 10 minutes.
